Why not check out theHONDA HR-V, it will not be on the road until winter 2015. Its' the smaller cousin of the Honda CR-V, it will be easy on gas, it can hold lots of cargo especially if you fold the middle seats down flat. It looks very stylish, and its' a Honda so I wouldn't expect many problems with it. Its on the road now in Japan and Europe under the name "Veselle" or something. Honda is only releasing bits and pieces of info on it now. I have been thinking of buying one, but I would like to have more information on it, and see one in person (on the road) It looks and seems very nice, it will be sold at a lower price point than the Honda HRV. They say that AWD will be available and also a Turbo version, but we'll just have to wait and see about that. Good luck with your search, and let us know how its going :)

The HR-V could be good. Or even the new 2015 Fit, on which it is based.

The most fuel-efficient current crossovers are the Mazda CX-5, Nissan Rogue, and Subaru Forester. So those are also worth a look.

The new VW Golf could be an alternative as well. You could also look into the Mazda5 'van'. It has been very reliable and can carry a lot of cargo and passengers and should be easy to get into an out of. The gas mileage is pretty good from what I understand.
