Reliable, fuel efficient SUV

The Right Car for Me | TrueDelta

I have hip and back problems, so want something I step up into (not low) with good lumbar support that won't have me feeling every bump in the road. I need to be able to lay down in it, so folding rear seats that go flat are key. I need minimum of 5'9 from top of folded down head rest to rear of cargo area. Can't be a big angle on the seats when flat (like in ford explorers) or a big drop from rear seat to cargo floor (like rogue). So far, I have been able to squeeze into some models of tucson and sportage. But best have been sorrento and santa fe. Fuel efficiency is key, so it has me going towards things like the 3.5l v6 in the 2010 santa fe limited as it gets close mileage to the 4cylinder. But reliability worries me....
I've tried a few wagons - subaru outback and ford focus - but didn't like the handling. The tucson I drove (2011) was rough - unsure if needed mechanical work or if that's how they ride. Jeep compass was bad.
Sunroof and AWD are nice to have but not essential.
Thanks for helping...I know Im chasing a unicorn.

Priorities: Fuel economy / Front seat support & comfort / Reliability & durability

Need minimum of 2 seats

Will consider both new and used cars
Maximum mileage: 150000
Maximum age: 10 years

Maximum price: C $ 14000

Maybe a Mazda CX-5 Pre-owned. Try to test drive it first as NVH on earlier Mazda's are bit high on that category. The new 2017 CX-5 is much improved. Also the Pathfinder/QX60 twins. Test drove both the new ones (2017) but prefer the QX60 due to its better interior quality and refimement and Highly comfortable front seats, quiteness and smooth ride. The Pathfinder is value for the money. Also easy ingress on the front.

I know it a 3 row SUV but space won't be an issue if that is one of your requirements and gets decent Mileage in the Hwy.

Regards..

How about an Acura RDX or MDX? Both have ample space in back, and the seats in both are VERY comfortable...

We hauled Ikea flat packs in our Buick Encore with no problems. We had half of the 60/40 seat down for the packs and my wife sat on the other have in comfort. The packs were long so we had to fold the front passenger seat forward which is a unice feature in this segment and give much added space.

Search Google for "Buick Encore cargo then look at images for a picture(could link photo on the mobile ) of the rear doors opened and the seats down. You'll notice that the rear seat bottoms tilt upward and the seat back is mostly flat. You'll notice that the leading edge of the rear door is about where one end of your body would be and also if you see an Encore in the parking lot to measure length to the end. At 6-feet I could n probably lay down diagonally and be comfortable.

The Encore comes in AWD and can be found for $13,000 and see just under 40 mpg if driven at the speed limit.

The new Regal wagon would be ideal but too expensive.

Just for kicks I folded down the rear seat in the 2024 XTS took the tape measure from the trunk to the top of the folded head rest and measure....6-feet! There is a slight dip going into the trunk.

But if you want AWD in a big, safe sedan the Impala or LaCrosse should be in your price range.
