Are there reasons beyond those listed that led you to look at the GL? Need three rows, or to tow somethng heavy? If not, I'd check out smaller, lighter vehicles. Mercedes has both the ML and the GLK. I liked the latter with a diesel quite a bit. The Audi Q5 TDI is also well worth a look.

Reliability could be iffy with any of the German vehicles out of warranty, if you'll be keeping it that long. Among gas-powered SUVs, the three-row Acura MDX gets decent fuel economy (EPA 18/27) and handles well.

Any initial reactions to these?

You need a Jeep Grand Cherokee. Its a better overall value than the MB or Audi. The diesel is a pricey option though and is only available on upper trim levels, you likely won't find one for $45k (I recently test drove one that was closer to $60k), but the same is true for the other models you're looking at. My advice would be to opt for the base V6, its got plenty of power and highway milage is good with the ZF seven speed transmission.
