We have owned 4 GC's altho none of them were diesel because the Ecodiesel wasn't available when we owned ours. We never had a problem with any of our Jeeps.

We bought a Touareg TDI Lux new in 2011. I cannot say enough about the quality and the ride in this SUV. We have towed our Golf on a dolly behind the Treg w/o issue.

We have only had one issue in all the years we have owned the Treg and it wasn't mechanical. It was a hard drive failure that was taken care of under warranty. The mpg's we have gotten with this car far exceeds the ratings, in some cases in the mid to high 30's.

We have looked at the new GC, particularly the interior. The Treg, while understated inside, in our opinion is of higher quality than the Jeep.

It's rare for any vehicle of any sort to be in the shop more than twice a year. With a new car, the question is more will it require even one repair in the first year.

The new Jeep Grand Cherokee has a glitchy infotainment system that can cause, among other things, the HVAC to behave oddly or all the warning lights to light up. It's possible that this problem has been sorted out with the latest ones.

If and when out of warranty repairs are needed, the VW would likely be more expensive to repair.

In general, I'd avoid air suspensions if you want to avoid a common source of headaches down the road.

The Touareg is a work of mechanical excellence. I have owned both the V-8 gas and short lived V-10 diesel. They went to the dealer for routine maintenance only. I had the fortune of having the air suspension in the diesel and the ride was the best of any vehicle I have ever owned. The standard suspension, which is the only thing now offered, is still a huge advantage over any other SUV capable of towing and providing superior fuel mileage. The Grand Cherokee continues to improve from a drop in reliability as are all of the Chrysler products. I purchased a RAM 1500 for a two year product and it has performed without incident. That said, when the project is completed, I will go back to a Treg TDi.

The maintenance cost of the Treg will be more than a Grand Cherokee, given an assumption there are not warranty issues. The Treg is German designed and maintenance parts (brake pads, rotors, etc) will cost more. But every time you get behind the wheel you get a satisfation rush that simply justifies the cost. The back seat is a little tight for large adults, and no third row seating is available (see the Audi Q7 if you need it). The torque curve? You can dry dock a battleship. YouTube has a test with a Treg pulling a 747, even with thousands of pounds of weight added in the rear for ballast.

Go with the Touareg. Your smile will never stop when behind the wheel.
