Volvo makes the most comfortable seats in the auto business, it's a fact. Auto reviewers love them and owners love them. The Volvo XC60 should be fairly quiet and has room for four.

My Mazda CX-9 has excellent seats also. My model, the top-of-the-line Grand Touring, has 20" wheels/tires that generate some road noise, but the mid-level Touring has less aggressive 18s that are much quieter.

I'd also look at the Lexus RX and GX as well as the Acura MDX.

I purchased a 2016 Subaru Outback and love the ride! Great driver's and passenger's seat positioning as well as split rear seats recline and great cargo area. They also offer the "Eyesight" feature, which I purchased, and it's great for drives on cruise control in case you get too close or start to drift off (auto lane correct feature).
I'd suggest at least giving it a test drive - I was pleasantly surprised!

I'm going to second the Volvo XC60--if the rear seat is roomy enough. If the people in either row are tall, it might not be. In my review I singled out front seat comfort, ride quality, and quietness as strengths.

The Acura could be too loud inside--road noise has long been a Honda weakness.

I have mixed feelings about the Lexus RX. Fairly quiet, and very comfortable front seats, but mediocre ride and handling.

A possible budget buy: the Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain have the smoothest, quietest ride among affordable SUVs, and plentiful legroom. Front seat comfort is okay, but not outstanding. Get a 2013 or newer for the 3.6-liter V6 that was first offered that model year.

We just returned from a 6,000 mile trip out west and back in a 2015 GMC Terrain 2.4l AWD. It was a great ride and smooth due to it's long wheel base. It was a little rough on west Texas roads but other than that it was not bad for a non-luxury cuv that can be purchased around $20K.

A little smaller is the Buick Encore. It also have Active Noise Control and a very good ride quality and 2017 Encore's can be found for $16K.

Want a cuv/suv quieter than a Lexus? The Buick Envision Premium beat Lexus RX by quite a margin in decibel testing at Car & Driver. The 2016 Envision Premium l is $10,000 less than the smaller Lexus NX while offer more features and options. It has standard AWD and with Active Noise Cancelation continue to be one of the better riding options without being sloppy like the Lexus RX.
