I have a Mazda 6S (V6 sport) and have thoroughly enjoyed it. It is a good looking car and a lot more fun to drive than a Honda Civic (or just about any Honda for that matter). I bought mine new 10 years ago (this month) and still have it; going on 160,000 miles. I'll hand this car down to my teenage son later this year, and he's really looking forward to getting behind the wheel. Maintenance on this vehicle has been practically nothing. I'm looking at upgrading to a BMW/Infinity/Lexus sports sedan, but still keep looking back at the Mazda 6 because I have enjoyed this car so much. I also have had a Mazda CX-9 for the past 4 years, and have never had the vehicle in the shop once.

Only Honda offers the Lanewatch camera, so if you really want that feature your choices are the Civic or the larger Accord. With the Civic you'll be well under your maximum even if you get the sporty Si, which is also quite fun (but which might be expensive to insure--check this before buying). I've partially reviewed the Civic Si as the comparison vehicle in my Kia Forte review (another pretty good option).

If you don't requite the Lanewatch camera, there are many good choices among current compacts. These aren't selling well with gas prices low, so you can probably find some great deals in the segment. The ones I like, aside from the Civic Si (more than the regular Civic) are the Mazda3, Ford Focus (members report huge discounts on 2014s), and VW Golf.

You should be able to buy any of these for well under $30,000, and quite possibly under $20,000.
