I would say the Mustang, but you can't get a newer (aka better) one for under $15k. The Miata would be a good one if you're okay with not having too much power. Good on gas and great handling. You can easily get a relatively new one (around 2008) for under $15k. Maybe an older BMW 3-Series (though that will cost some money to maintain).

I can't think of much else. Hopefully someone else has some good ideas.

Oh, and there's also the Honda S2000 and Nissan 350Z. I'm not really a fan of the 350Z, though.

I'm not a fan of the Z, and consider both the Mustang and 3-Series to be too large to be sports cars.

You really cannot go wrong with a Miata.

An S2000 is a strong choice if your insurance company's rates for the car aren't cost prohibitive. They often era.

A BMW Z3 / first-gen Z4 and Porsche Boxster are also possibilities, though getting them below $15k will entail middling (or worse) reliability. Our reliability stats for these aren't bad.

There were some great sports cars and convertibles in the last 25 years. Some of which could be below 50000 miles and within the $15000.

What I would like to know is what the member from Kansas wants to do with this car: race it, autocross it, joy ride it , show it on meets and cruises? Put it into daily commute duty?

There ought to be a Porsche Boxter somewhere.

A Boxster would be cool, but I can guarantee the maintenance costs on a sub-$15k Boxster are going to be expensive.
