Longhaul commuter for a big guy

The Right Car for Me | TrueDelta

Member4448

Thought I wanted an SUV or crossover, mostly because I've had a wagon/hatchback/SUV in the house for 30 years. I've used them for family camping and home repair stuff as well as commuing. Replacing a 2006 Ford Freestyle, 180,000 miles, that is much bigger than I need now that our daughter drives herself around.

But really don't like the driving position or legroom of most of them small enough to do 85 miles a day of highway commuting without breaking the bank. I ended up with a list of Subaru Forester and VW Golf Wagon. Nissan Rogue would work, but don't really like the brand (can't explain why).

So, I've decided to drive some sedans as well as the two I mentioned. Did my first test drives today and liked the Subaru Legacy a lot better than the Forester, it just felt a lot more comfortable. The Outback is simply too big and expensive. On my list are the Ford Fusion, Toyota Camry, and Hyundai Sonata. Hondas always seem short on legroom.

Need some encouragement/discouragement on moving to a sedan after all these years, as well as car ideas for a 6' 240 pound fiftysomething.

A used Genesis can be a very good value. My only qualm is that the 2015 is so much better, a thoroughly excellent car. Same with the 2011-2014 vs. 2015 Sonata.

I am interested in your impressions of the Fusion. I like how they ride, but suspect some people find the tuning overly firm.

You might also consider other large sedans. The 2014 Chevrolet Impala is a very good car. And I really like how the Dodge Charger and Chrysler 300 drive, and those with the 8-speed automatic (offered with the V6 since 2012) get nearly 30 mpg on the highway. I just wish they still offered the Magnum wagon.

My first stop at the rental car counter is almost always a full-size sedan, but I'm dealing with driveway space limitations that would be helped by a car shorter than my current Freestyle.

Haven't had time to drive any other cars, but did get to sit into the Kia Forte 5 yesterday. It had good front legroom, but the salesman told me they rarely see an SX trim with the 1.6 liter turbo engine, manual or automatic.

Michael, I like the 2015 Sonata and have seen good reviews of the 1.6 turbo with dual-clutch manual in it. The Elantra GT would be practical, but I find the styling a bit overwrought.

I just had an e-Golf for a week and found the seat surprisingly comfortable. I believe the Golf Sportwagen has the same seat. Fuel economy is very good with the 1.8T engine, and outstanding with the diesel. Reliability is good so far, but of course it's very early.

Drove, but didn't really like, the Toyota Camry LE. Plan to drive the two Hyundais above on Friday. Will probably drive the Camry SE.

Down to two cars, Ford Fusion SE (probably 2.5) and Subaru Legacy 2.5 Premium. A mechanical issue with my current car is speeding up the buying process.

Very different rides, both enjoyable. Fusion sportier, Legacy kind of luxurious.
